- This a realistic portrayal of conflicting loyalties. When women play so many roles and aim to please - not easy. I loved this novel for tackling modern challenges so well, not to mention grief. It’s the type of book that keeps you turning the page to see how Samantha copes with something not far flung, but all too familiar.
- I love this book. It’s a real page turner. I just couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen to that family next. The writing is so good...She just sucks u right in to her life.......I felt like I was right there in their home witnessing it all. Can’t wait for your next book Sondra. This is a wonderful book....I loved every page of it. Did not want it to end.
- This book is well-written, very accessible and readable. It perfectly captures the lifestyle of certain very wealthy, largely oblivious, Eastern MA people. Although it dealt with very serious themes, I didn't feel very much. The characters were shallow and two-dimensional at best. Despite many flaws, it was a good job for a first book. I would certainly take a look at her second.
- Appearances was very hard to put down once I started it. The family at the center of the story is going through a very difficult time when one member is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Conflicts that occur within the family almost tear the entire family apart.
The book appeals to everyone, rich or poor.... none of us can escape what life has in store for us . Reading this book makes us consider and examine the relationships in our own families. This book is a Great Read. - For anyone who has had a loved one go through cancer, Appearances is a must-read story about the pain, hope, and acceptance that families experience. Sondra Helene puts the rollercoaster of feelings that this journey is into words so eloquently that I read the book in only two evenings. While marital challenges are also woven into the protagonist's story, what shines through is that Appearances is a beautiful ode and testament to the strength of sisterhood and family.
