- I highly recommend this book if you have Lyme disease or if you suspect that Lyme disease may be playing a role in your ill-health or have chronic anxiety (or another chronic health condition) and have not yet found a solution. I also highly recommend it for practitioners who are both treating Lyme disease patients and those, like myself, who want to really understand all aspects in order to make good referrals for Lyme treatment.
I read it cover to cover in one sitting and could not put it down! I took notes so I could do a blog review for my community so I’m sharing the notes here
Chapter 1 – An excellent discussion about the problems with long-term antibiotics for chronic Lyme disease and when antibiotics should be used. The chronic inflammatory autoimmune connection is unique to Dr. Ingels’ approach for treating Lyme disease and makes a great deal of sense. The Lyme facts are invaluable Lyme spirochete going dormant and hiding in scar tissue and lymph nodes; the nymph the most dangerous; Lyme-reactive antibodies form against proteins in the brain, giving rise to neurological symptoms.
Chapter 2 - Covers complex and controversial issues with diagnosis and pitfalls of the various testing that is available. It contains Lyme signs/symptoms and a Lyme questionnaire. It was eye-opening to learn that the bull’s-eye rash is Lyme specific and that changes in handwriting and mixing up words may be a sign of chronic Lyme disease. This is one of my favorite chapters of the book and is very comprehensive.
Chapter 3 – Gut and immune restoring protocols and more on the autoimmune connection. Addressing gut health is key to any condition and Dr. Ingels reiterates that addressing the immune system is key for recovery from Lyme.
Chapter 4 – Immune boosting diet and the importance of alkalinity. This is my least favorite chapter because I’m an advocate of the Paleo diet and have found that when done well with large amounts of vegetables, it is healing and alkaline. I am pleased to see coffee is off the list but would have liked to hear his experiences with intermittent fasting.
Chapter 5 - Covers targeting the infection in a way that doesn’t impact gut flora and undermine the immune system. This chapter has extensive coverage of the herbal protocols Dr. Ingels has found to be effective for his patients Zhang protocol, his version of the Cowden protocol and others. He goes into great detail for each herb, including products to help with a Herxheimer reaction, as well as the rationale and protocols for breaking up biofilm. It’s also one of my favorite chapters in the book.
Chapter 6 - Cleaning your home and environment and getting rid of toxic chemicals and products, as well as addressing mold. This is also common-sense to address for any condition so it’s great to cover for Lyme.
Chapter 7 - Sleep, exercise and stress reduction. This is also common-sense to address for any condition. I do have a professional difference of opinion for the GABA recommendation for sleep and typically start my clients on much lower doses. I also love GABA for stress and anxiety.
Chapter 8 - Advanced protocols for specific symptoms mitochondrial issues, neuropathy and balance, low dose immunotherapy, LDN and other approaches where you’ll need to work with a health care provider. Another favorite chapter of mine.
Chapter 9 – Additional lab testing, SIBO, Mast cell activation syndrome and POTS are addressed in relation to Lyme disease. This chapter is enlightening.
The case studies throughout the book reflect the complex nature of Lyme disease and help us get a better understanding about unexpected symptoms, as well as Dr. Ingels’ level of expertise. One such example is Peter’s story he developed tics but none of the other classic Lyme symptoms, PANS was found and then Lyme disease.
Given that neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in Lyme disease I hope to see more coverage of this in a later edition or follow-up book. I work with individuals with anxiety and underlying Lyme disease is very common, with benzodiazepines and SSRIs commonly prescribed. Using nutritional approaches for the anxiety and/or depression and since it gets to the root cause it’s more effective, plus it lowers the toxic burden and side-effects of added medications.
Overall, this book is an excellent resource and I highly recommend it! It offers practical solutions and hope for those who have been suffering with chronic Lyme disease and are seeking a solution.
Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert, Nutritionist and author "The Antianxiety Food Solution" - This was the first book on Lyme disease I read that didn't make my diagnosis feel terrifying, but rather encouraging that it can be managed and even cured. I had followed several of the diet changes recommended and herbal supplements prior to this book coming out and have seen a significant improvement in my symptoms. This book gave me helpful additional information and tools to try to continue to improve and how to manage flares. I would recommend this to anyone with Lyme disease who did not find benefit from long term antibiotic treatment.

Amour thyroid dose by symptoms not TSH/Progesterone (helps immune system/thyroid/blood pressure/blood sugar/makes cortisol and more)/ozone (raises oxygen)/Far Infrared Sauna/herbs/EDTA/DMPS IV chelations/Vit E/Vit C/fish oil 2000mg/Zn/Mg/Mn/Vit B12 methylcobalamin with intrinsic factor/5000mcg of biotin/coenzyme Q10/ginkgo 120mg/Nature's plus- Source of life multiple/Vit A (helps immune system and helps oxygen absorb in the brain and helps the gut and blood brain barrier)/ iron/hair test to see mineral levels and heavy metals)/Zyto scan to see infections and how organs/glands are working)/Genova tests and more may help..No gluten/dairy/soy/sugar/GMO/food with a label...taking vitamins/good oils/minerals...probiotic...LDN..detoxing helps me. LDN helps the immune system work right and helps block hidden gluten. Gluten is wheat/barley/rye..oats/corn/rice. Rice is low in gluten. Grain free may help the brain/body and low sugar/starch since it feeds the Lyme/coinfections. Sunlight/Vit D3 5000IU. HCl and enyzmes with meals. Rhodiola (raises oxygen)/ herbs for Lyme/ AL complex. No antibiotics since they may hurt mitochondria/hurt gut lining/lower Mg/wipe out good bacteria in the large intestines/lower the immune system and more. Eating organic/exercise/good water/lecithin/evening primrose oil and more help me. I eat Asian/Celiac style. Trying to take herbs 2-3X a day may help. Once a day is not enough. Probiotics taken a few times a day before a meal may help. Progesterone/Vit B12 may help bones/myelin. Ask Chiropractor/acupuncturist/Alternative doctor for help and more may help. - This book is invaluable for anyone - practitioner or patient, who is navigating a healing journey with Lyme disease or any other chronic infection. What I love about this book is that Dr. Ingels is very clear that not everything that "looks like Lyme" really is Lyme. But, he is clear that testing is available to clearly identify Lyme issues, and walks the reader through a variety of protocols that support healing. He is also very clear that not every protocol works for everyone, but provides many resources and options to give you the best chance for healing. This book is excellent, and represents the insights of a very skilled and experienced clinician who has helped so many in our Lyme-filled region to recover.

This book provides great content on approaching Lyme Disease holistically, exploring everything from diet to herbs and even touching on EMFs. This is a must-read for anyone with Lyme Disease.

As an aside, the (seemingly endless) chapters where the character is supposed to be traipsing through an actual heart was not only awful metaphorically, but also reflected that absolutely no time was spent to understand the ACTUAL anatomy of a heart. This, as a heart doctor, made a bad situation worse and was grating for me to read."

- Not every recommendation is a smash hit.
I don't feel bad about reading "The Paper Magician." It's not a bad book. It's not a great book. Mostly what I really feel after finishing "The Paper Magician" is disappointment. Not a lot mind you, but enough that I wish Holmberg had done a slightly better job.
Holmberg does have a good introduction. It did not take more than a couple words for me to be whisked away into this new world seeking out adventure and excitement. The first several chapters kept my anticipation levels high as everything started clicking together and I could start to see the outline of something great. Next thing I know, it happened - the great catalyst that sends a story screeching out to the wild blue where heroes are made, and villains are ended. "This is it!" I thought as Ceony is thrust into the start of her adventure - and then the rest of the book is spent with the heroine literally flailing around in her mentors memories and emotions.
The previous reading experience that keeps floating through my head as I try to wrap my thoughts around what kept this book from being "great" is camping. Camping is a lot of fun (or can be), but when read in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" it dragged the story to a slow crawl. The same holds true when Ceony goes "camping" (figuratively, not literally) in her adventure. Instead of growing and making her own story, we spend endless chapters learning about Thane's past. Without looking it up, my recollection is that more than half the book is spent flailing (literally, not figuratively) around in events that have little to no impact to the actual outcome of the story, or growth of the main character other than falling in love with the first person who has been "nice" to her.
Again, this is not a bad book. Three stars is not horrible, but there is definatly much room for improvement in my opinion. I was interested in reading the second book in the series to see if things improve any for Ceony's story, but the reviews already written for that book lead me to believe that is not the case. I will be spending my money elsewhere for now, but I'll keep Holmberg in mind next time I don't have anything already high up on my reading wishlist. - This was my book group's selection for June and I was quite happy to read it since the premise appealed to me very much. The opening of the story lived up to my expectations. The groundwork was laid for us to meet the primary characters and to begin to grasp the magic that could be accomplished with paper and its folding. Initially, I found the magical portions to be very intriguing and creative and settled in for an entertaining read.
As the story moved along, I found myself becoming disappointed as I felt the book didn't live up to its potential. The character development fell rather flat and I found myself annoyed by the immature behavior of the protagonist - I often had to remind myself she is 19 years old in the book since she came across as someone much, much younger. I especially needed to remind myself of this as the romance factor was introduced. Even with her being 19, there was a definite "ick" factor and since her behaviour was so juvenile, I had a double "ick" factor.
The premise of the magic is what saved the book for me but even that wasn't developed to its full potential. The folding was such an intricate part to the success of the plot that I wish the author had taken more time to expand on it. Great start but suffered due to the romance taking over.
Bottom line While some of the whimsical aspects reminded me a lot of the early Harry Potter books, the comparison to those was its downfall. While J.K. Rowling maintained the creativity throughout seven books, this author wasn't able to capitalize on a brilliant idea. While I think this book might very well be appreciated by the YA reader (much better than "Twilight" or other novels geared toward this age group), I didn't find it to be a particularly engaging read for the adult reader who appreciates YA and is looking for more than a romance story with some magic thrown in. - An odd combination of coming of age story, fantasy, and thriller, but it all works!
A young girl graduates from what seems to be the magician's version of high school, and begins her apprenticeship. Each graduate must chose a specific man ace material with which to bond--as magic only works on man man made materials, and each magician only gets to bond with one material. However, this student does not get to chose, but is stuck with paper magic.
Her master, Magician Thane, is a weird dude, very cold and distant, but clearly extremely talented. However, it quickly becomes apparent hat there is much more to Thane than appears at first blush.
Evil quickly appears in the form of Lira...a magician gone bad. At some point someone figured out that humans were man made, and they could be the subject of magic. While strictly prohibited a renegade band nonetheless took advantage of this power, and became some combination of criminals and social outcasts. Lira arrives and takes Thanes heart. This sets the stage for the main action in the book, our heroine's quest to save Magician Thane...a quest which takes her into his past, and into his heart.

Most of this calendar's space is devoted to the illustrations (which are beautiful). There is almost no room to write anything substantial by the dates. So the calendar is currently hanging in my kitchen as a decoration piece, and I had to buy another wall calendar that I can actually use on a day-to-day basis. All the same, I love Harry Potter and am happy that I own the calendar.

The author's writing is impossible to follow completely because a lot of unnecessary words are added in, some of which don't add any meaning to whatever it is that she is trying to say. Just no. - this book is my go to staple to feed my female soul. if anyone can get it right and deep it is Clarissa. to me, she is like the female version of Joseph Campbell. she totally unfolds the female archetypal characters and souls. if you want a book with meat and bones that talks about the issues of the female character and her relationships with other women ... within her family ... who betray her or abuse her, abandon her or neglect her ... and you have had that happen to you and you need a healing through profound understanding ... then get this book, read it and reread it and digest every bit of hit because there is nothing but soul food in here! thank heaven, God and angels for Clarissa. she is a national jewel and anything she creates speaks to me and i think it will speak to you as well.
- This is the book I return to for wisdom and guidance, that I quote to explain life lessons to friends and grandchildren, that I understand better and differently whatever age I am when I reread it, starting at 38 up til now when I am 67. Clarissa Pinkola Estes, a Jungian analyst and storyteller with a tradition of women storytellers on both sides of her family, tells the original versions of fairy tales and folk tales from around the world and then meticulously, exquisitely exposes the deep hidden archetypal meaning hiding within. From love to anger to finding and learning to trust our wild wisdom, she covers every aspect of women's lives. I buy spare copies whenever I find them to have on hand to give out whenever I find a receptive soul.
- I am still enjoying this book. The stories in it really resonates with me. I had stopped reading it for a couple of months after finishing a story when I had a break down about my life. I had started reading the book again to take my mind off of things and the next story, "The Red Shoes" touched a lot on what I am experiencing. Feeling a need to escape and get to a life that is happier/soulful. The Ugly Duckling is also one of my favorite stories in this book. The way the author takes the symbols and decode the meaning and themes of these stories is amazing. As kids hearing these fairy tales we'd never know that there was a deeper meaning to them. As adults they mean so much more.

- Years ago, I would not have given the book, or its title a second thought. But with lived experience, comes a different perspective. The clarity that it has given me is mind blowing. Dr. Estes is totally on point in her narrative and understanding of the woman archetype within...in all aspects and phases of our lives. She brings a wholeness and a healing to those of us who suffered under the yoke of 'expectations' and allows us to live free. Thus, we owe it to our daughters, granddaughters, and daughters-in-law to allow them to 'run with the wolves' and not encumber them with the 'roles' in which many of us were expected to fulfill.
This is a must read for ALL women and for the men who love them. This isn't a 'fluff' read at all...it is deep and messy at times, but the narrative she paints with her words and stories connect with every woman who has yearned to be free and run with the wolves!! - Couldn’t get past the first chapter. I’m not sure if I just lost my attention span or have gotten dumber over the years, but, based on the other 1 and 2 star reviews, I’m thinking that the writing is just terrible. I felt like I was trying to read the Bible, if the Bible was written in the style of Alice in Wonderland. So many unnecessary words and long sentences. Pass.
- This book is for all women, who struggled through life because of the pressures and pre-tailored expectations of their families, socieities, religious leaders, husbands, children, etc, and finally saw the light of the moon and could not fight the urge to howl (owwwwwwwwwwwwww).
The basic concept is that everything that goes wrong in women's lives in the modern world is that they have forgotten their wild nature, that place inside their mind which still leads with an animal instict that makes women strong and with much power. The Wild Woman is between bars inside each one of us, howling and scratching her way out, demanding that she has time to create art, to heal, to protect her territory, to guide, to give life, to mourne, to make love, to laugh scandelously with no shame, to live with no boundries, to teach, to carry wisdom, and to trust her intuition and instincts.
